Our beginner class focuses on stroke technique and pure fundamentals from the perspective of a player who has never held a racquet. This will include dead ball feeding (drop-and-hit, tossing, and coach feeding) with some live ball rallying. Covering forehands, backhands, volleys, overheads, and serves, participants will have learned all the major building blocks of tennis. The class culminates with match play and participants learning to play actual points and scoring for sets. This is a great course to learn if you have never played before, or if you want to better understand and review the core fundamentals of the game.
Please bring your own racquet and make sure to wear non-marking tennis shoes.
Classes are open to anyone 18 years of age and older. You do not need to be connected to the University of Michigan.
Classes held each Monday from September 13 - December 13. No class on October 19. There are a total of 12 classes for this session.

No, we do not offer make ups on an individual basis.
Do I need my own racquet?
Yes. Please see the following notes from one of our instructors.
- Get a full size racquet not a junior. That’s 27 inches long.
- Head size should be close to 100 sq inches. I wouldn’t recommend anything smaller than 98 or larger than 105.
- For grip size you want either a 4&1/4 or 4&3/8 sizes (those are the two most common grip sizes) if you have smaller hands go with the 1/4. Otherwise get the 3/8th.
- Shop somewhere you can hold some racquets to see how they feel in your hand. A decent entry level racquet should retail around $100 but often time you can find them on sale.
